No Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid for Australia—What It Means for Tynan Kia Sutherland Customers
Kia Australia has officially confirmed that the Kia Sportage plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will not be making its way to local showrooms anytime soon. This news comes as a disappointment to eco-conscious Australian drivers hoping for a more electrified option in the Sportage medium SUV range. At Tynan Kia Sutherland, we’re here to break down what this decision means for you, and what alternatives are available.
⚡ No PHEV for the Current Kia Sportage Generation
Despite being available in European and Asian markets since 2024, the Kia Sportage PHEV will not be offered in Australia for the remainder of this generation’s life cycle—expected to last another two to three years.
Kia Australia’s marketing chief Dean Norbiato explained that global supply limitations are to blame. With North America and Korea receiving the bulk of Sportage PHEV production, it’s simply not feasible to introduce the model into our local market at this stage.
"PHEV is going to be a difficult one to bring in this current generation," Norbiato told media outlet Drive. "North America and the Korean domestic market will get the lion's share for now."
🚗 What’s Under the Hood of the Sportage PHEV Overseas?
International versions of the Kia Sportage PHEV feature the familiar 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 13.8kWh battery, delivering an electric-only driving range of up to 55km—perfect for short urban commutes.
While Australian-spec Sportage models share this engine, the plug-in hybrid tech is reserved for markets that Kia deems a higher priority for electrified powertrain allocation.
🌏 Limited Supply and Waitlist Woes
The decision not to bring the Sportage PHEV to Australia is consistent with Kia’s ongoing supply challenges. Even the Kia Sorento PHEV, the only plug-in hybrid currently available in Australia, continues to face lengthy backorders.
“We still have a PHEV Sorento, and the supply has been very tight to the point where we’ve had back orders that built up for it,” Norbiato added.
This bottleneck has led Kia to prioritise models that can be readily delivered to customers without months-long delays—a move that helps protect both the brand’s reputation and customer satisfaction.
🌿 Emissions Rules and the Push for Greener Options
The lack of a Sportage PHEV does come at a cost in the context of Australia’s incoming emissions regulations. The New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) will increasingly push manufacturers to reduce their fleet-wide emissions.
Kia Australia product boss Roland Rivero acknowledged that while a PHEV Sportage would have helped offset emissions from petrol and diesel variants, it’s been difficult to justify given the tight supply chain.
"We’d love PHEV, particularly under NVES... it does get you some credits, but up to now, it’s been a hard one for us to justify," Rivero stated.
🛠️ What’s Still Available at Tynan Kia Sutherland?
While the Sportage PHEV may not be arriving soon, Tynan Kia Sutherland continues to offer an impressive lineup of Sportage variants, including:
- Kia Sportage Hybrid (HEV) – Available now and a great choice for fuel-efficient motoring without the need to plug in.
- 2.0-litre petrol and turbo diesel engines – Proven performance for everyday Australian driving.
- Facelifted Sportage models – Updated styling and technology across the range.
If you’re looking for an electrified SUV, we also stock the Kia Niro EV and Niro HEV, as well as the popular Kia EV6 for those ready to go fully electric.
🔮 What’s Next?
With the Sportage having just undergone its mid-life update, we anticipate that the next-generation Sportage—likely 4–5 years away—will finally bring the PHEV variant to Australian shores. In the meantime, Kia’s focus will remain on its hybrid offerings and managing global vehicle supply to meet local demand efficiently.
