Kia outsells Mazda in August 2025 after launching Tasman ute, cheaper electric cars
In a major shift on the Australian new-car sales chart, Kia has outsold Mazda – breaking Mazda’s long-running hold on a top-three position.
A Strong Month for Kia
Kia’s success was driven by the arrival of its first-ever ute, the Kia Tasman, alongside a growing line-up of affordable electric and hybrid vehicles. These additions have given the brand broader appeal, helping it climb into third place behind only Toyota and Ford.
The Tasman ute has been a standout new entry, giving buyers another choice in the competitive dual-cab segment, while Kia’s EV3 and EV5 SUVs are attracting attention as practical, value-focused electric options.
Mazda Slips to Fourth
Mazda, a consistent favourite with Australian drivers, slipped down the rankings to fourth place. It’s the first time in three years that Kia has moved ahead of Mazda on the monthly sales ladder.
What This Means for the Market
Kia’s rise reflects the changing demands of Australian car buyers. With utes remaining popular, and growing interest in electric and hybrid options, Kia has positioned itself as a strong competitor by expanding its offering beyond the familiar Sportage, Carnival, and Sorento.
For buyers, the message is clear: the market is evolving, and brands that bring fresh products with a mix of performance, efficiency, and affordability are being rewarded.
